In a move that would have put a smile on the face of Clark Griswold, Cadillac showed off its CTS Sport Wagon at Pebble Peach last week. Remember when Cadillac built all sorts of monstrosities? Huge, grossly blinged-out SUVs? Ridiculous over-the-top trucks with little to no actual practical use? Well, perhaps those dinosaurs are really going extinct. With the CTS Sport Wagon, Cadillac offers a little more space than the sedan for those who actually need it.
More of a hatchback than a true wagon, the CTS is built on the same chassis as its sedan counterpart, but is just a bit shorter in overall length. The hatchback design offers 25 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats compared to the 14 cubic feet offered in the CTS sedan. The engine choices are also the same as the sedan with a base 263 horsepower 3.6 liter V6 and an optional 304 horse power direct-injection version of the same engine. The V-6 Sport Wagon’s fuel economy is expected to be similar to the peak rating of the sedan’s 26 mpg highway rating. An efficient 2.9L turbo diesel engine is being developed for CTS models primarily in European and Asian markets. It is a compact, dual overhead cam, four-valve V-6 engine that delivers optimal fuel economy as well as reduced emissions and noise. The engine is rated at 250 horses. Transmissions are either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic in either rear- or all-wheel drive.
Some of the features of the Sport Wagon include a seamless roof load management system that blends with the roofline for a cleaner appearance. The Sport Wagon also comes with a powered liftgate (engaged by key fob or in-vehicle button), adjustable in-floor containment, new 19-inch wheels and a larger available panoramic rear sunroof. The CTS Sport Wagon, like its sedan predecessor, also includes available features such as all-wheel drive, a 40-gigabyte internal hard drive, and pop-up navigation screen. The interior of the Sport Wagon, again the same as the sport sedan, includes streamlined instrumentation, LED lighting and handcrafted accents with French stitching.
Hopefully vehicles like the Sport Wagon will replace the Escalade, etc…Those fraction of a percentage of people that need to haul their speed boat to the lake in a leather behemoth with 8 DVD players and chrome will have to suffer through somehow.
