Unimog-Based RV Killed By Emissions Law, Only Two Post-Apocalyptic Land Rafts Left! [Unimog U500]

| понедельник, 31 августа 2009 г.

The world’s toughest RV, built onto a Unimog U500 chassis by Global Expedition Vehicles, is being discontinued. But, there’s two left, so well-heeled survival enthusiasts had better hurry. We’re just relieved to see we can still get airbrushed graphics on the sides; no RV should be without them.

Both of GXV’s remaining Unimog stock are powered by 6.4 turbo diesels powering all four wheels through a 16-gear transmission. That powerplant give the Unimog legendary go-anywhere ability — it can run on anything from Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel to ditch water — but is ironically responsible for killing US imports. New US emissions regulations require the fitment of both a particulate filter and a catalytic converter. Not only would that cat kill the ‘Mog’s drink anything ability, but would also require the fitment of a five-foot long canister, something there simply isn’t space for. As a result, the official importer, Freightliner, has pulled the Unimog from the US market, killing these RV conversions.

The Unimog makes a particularly capable platform for an RV due not only for its off-road ability, but also its peerless quality and on-road refinement. GXV takes both attributes and accentuates them fitting marine-spec components that will never corrode and triplicate electrics in 12v, 120v and 230v. Combine both with a solar panel-recharged 510 Ah gel battery and you can understand why these vehicles are so popular with the global adventure set: they can rely on them to work in any condition, something that can literally be life saving.

Fans of go-anywhere RVs needn’t despair however, should you fail to grab one of the two remaining vehicles, GXV has plans to base its future range on the Military-spec Western Star 4900 SA, a vehicle that comes in 4x4 or 6x6 versions and can be outfitted with any Military upgrade including snorkels or even Unimog tires (giving it 20-inches of ground clearance. That vehicle comes stock with 450 HP and the ability to haul anything from logs to a battle tank or, in the near future, the baddest extreme survival RV ever made. [GXV via Squob]

Israel Pushing The Boundaries on Electric Cars

|

A Silicon Valley Startup called Project Better Place is pushing the car industry in Israel to become less reliant on fossil fuels and more reliant on electricity.

The Silicon Valley start-up Project Better Place hopes the fully electric prototype will be on Israel’s streets in large numbers beginning at the end of 2010. This has huge political ramifications as well as environmental ones. Although many hurdles are still in its way.

While the price point is similar to that of a standard sedan, adoption of alternative powered vehicles has still been largely driven by mainstream car manufacturers who have been slow to adapt as they profit from the oil industry as well.

Project Better Place partners with mainstream car manufacturers like Reinault Nissan to help make the world a better place one electric car at a time.

Rural Canadian Wins Koenigsegg CCX, Has No Road To Drive It On [Offbeat News]

| воскресенье, 30 августа 2009 г.

Louie Edgi, a cancer patient currently residing in the horribly frigid area of Norman Wells, Canada, has won the Cash and Cars Lottery, which supports the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society. The prize? A Koenigsegg CCX. The catch? Norman Wells is a remote town up in God's Country with only one 12-kilometer dirt road. And it gets worse.

No highways lead to Norman Wells, meaning the car would need to be flown in or driven up a winter ice road. Edgi opted for the cash while belting out possibly the most un-Jalopnik statement in the history of the world by saying, "The car is a Swedish make; it'll do 400 kilometres an hour. I don't see anybody would need that..." [CBCNews]

5 Car Brands That Have No Use Anymore

|

Sometimes a brand needs to die. Here’s my pick on five car brands that deserve to take a long dirt nap.

Packard Motor Company

Should Ford Motor dump Mercury and Volvo? Jerry York, the longtime adviser to billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian’s Tracinda, which recently acquired 5.6% of Ford, seems to think so. According to Automotive News, on May 1 he said out loud what a lot of people have been quietly thinking, namely that Ford should sell its two struggling brands, Mercury and Volvo.

via Autospies

1 Mercury
I just have this picture of a bunch of old farts riding around. Mercury needs to take a dirt nap asap.

2 Volvo
Ford has way to many brands to manage Volvo, sell it off or kill it. It’s better off either way.

3 GM
I hate the GM brand. Never liked a single one of its cars. Chevrolet is a much stronger brand.

4 Buick
Reminds of Mercury for all the same reasons. Agh, kill it off soon.

5 Saturn
Good concept, wrong era. Just die now. Please.

Toyota Backs Down From Desktop Copyright Request [All Your Wallpapers Are Belong To Toyota]

|

Toyota has contacted Jalopnik and informed us their company's perplexing attempt to claim rights to desktop images uploaded by users and hosted at DesktopNexus was the result of an "internal miscommunication" and they they offered a sincere apology to those at the site involved in the fracas. This is a major reversal. As recently as Moday the company's lawyers were threatening to pursue legal action if any desktop image with any Toyota vehicle was left on DesktopNexus. To Toyota's credit, they realized what a major publicity mistake they were making and quickly changed course before making it an even bigger story. The statement from Toyota below the jump.

Hi Matt.

The recent request Toyota made to have certain photos of Toyota vehicles removed from the public wallpaper site, DesktopNexus, was the result of an internal miscommunication.

To protect the legal rights and agreements we have with the photographers we hire, we ask that the photographs not be used for direct consumer advertising, sales brochures and the like.

If people wish to post their own photos of one of their own vehicles, that's their right. In fact, we're pleased that people would want to show their Toyota vehicles to the world. So have at it. Consider the wallpapers on DesktopNexus to be fair game for personal use.

Please let your readers know that we offer a sincere apology to the DesktopNexus site and its users for any inconvenience or disruption this miscommunication may have caused.

Thanks for your understanding,

Scott DeYager

The Fast and the Furious Validated: You CAN Blow the Welds On Your Intake Manifold! [Danger To The Manifold]

|

Every denizen of the automotive intersphere is undoubtedly familiar with The Fast And The Furious which, even with all of it's gearhead faux pas, has become a sacred icon credited with starting the spo-com revolution many moons ago. It seems one of those cult statements just became a self-fulfilling prophesy as a Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX has blown the welds on it's intake manifold. Even though the series has become a sort of guilty pleasure, we know you're stoked for the The Fast And The Furious 4. "Now, me and the mad scientist got to rip apart the block... and replace the piston rings you fried!" A quick description of what happened below the jump. [AntiRice]

So me and my buddy were tuning his gsx yesterday. He had just got a custom intake manifold made. We were on 29psi and full throttle, when he let off the gas we heard a pop(resembling a gunshot). He tapped the trottle and it sounded like it was a massive exhaust leak. the A/F gauge and boost gauge wasnt reading. We pulled over to find out that the intake manifold had blew up, literally. The whole bottom plate of it was blown completely off. the only thing holding it up was the break booster line.

MINI creates amazing 3D ad using your webcam [w/VIDEO]

Click the image above to see video of MINI's 3D Cooper Convertible

MINI is proving to be somewhat recession-proof, with 43% and 56% increases over the past two dreadful sales months. The marque is also keeping up its cred as a clever marketeer, with a new print campaign that can make a 3D MINI appear on your computer screen. The specially-designed MINI ad is able to interact with your webcam using technology called Augmented Reality. Simply log onto the URL printed on the ad, follow the instructions (in German), and voila! You have a realistic 3D model of the new MINI Convertible. To turn the 3D model or zoom it in or out, simply move the actual ad in front of your webcam. It takes a bit of processing power, so it helps to have a relatively modern computer. Follow the jump to view video of the interactive ad, and if you want to try it for yourself, print one out and surf to the special website. Thanks for the tip, Cory!
