Until Toyota Makes The PriusPlane, There’s SeaPort Airlines

| понедельник, 28 сентября 2009 г.

SeaPort Airlines PC-12 prop plane

SeaPort Airlines PC-12 prop plane

As reported by Autotopia, Oregon-based SeaPort Airline has become the first entirely green airline to offer enviro-friendly air travel between the Portland International Airport and Seattle’s Boeing Field. First opening its doors back in June, the fledgling airline is a small operation with a fleet only 3 planes large, and it’s leaving an even smaller carbon footprint. Using planes assembled by Swiss aeronautic company Pilatus, SeaPort ferries passenger’s in turboprop PC-12’s. The 47 ft long, 14 ft high, single engine PC-12’s are only able to accommodate 9 passengers at a time [plus 2 crew], and have a maximum altitude of 30,000 ft. Suitable for the short local commute, the PC-12’s reach top cruising speeds at 300 mph - and only consume an average of 51 gallons of fuel per flight. With that kind of economy SeaPort frees itself from credit-based emissions trading, but they don’t pocket the extra cash. Instead, SeaPort funnels the money the would ordinarily spend on offsets directly into conservation giant Columbia Land Trust’s Northwest forest conservation project, the Working Forest Initiative.

In addition to being greener, SeaPort Airline is also faster than comparable airlines flying the same pattern. It’s a little more expensive, with base round-trip airfare hovering around $149, but because it falls outside of the TSA’s jurisdiction, many veteran fliers are willing to absorb the cost simply to escape the lengthy security measures.

A True Zero-Emission Car: You Need Wal-Mart

| суббота, 26 сентября 2009 г.

A new Sam’s Club Solar Kiosk

Cars like the Tesla Roadster are 100% electric, but that doesn’t mean they’re Zero-Emissions. You have to get the electricity you need to re-charge them from somewhere, and the main source for grid electricity in the US? Coal. So to power your super clean Tesla Roadster, you have to burn a bunch of coal. Makes it less appealing, doesn’t it?

Well, in California, being a smug eco/electro-driver just got a little easier, and from a company you’d never expect: Sam’s Club, aka Wal-Mart.

In nine California Sam’s Club stores: Corona, Murrieta, Glendora, Ontario, La Habra, Chino, Long Beach, Fountain Valley, and Torrance, there will be so called Home Efficiency Centers where consumers can learn about where they can buy various eco-friendly house fixtures, mainly solar panels.

The kiosks will hook consumers up with established solar sellers and installers including Borrego Solar and BP Solar. The kiosks also offer $100 off every kilowatt of installed solar power. Now, the economics of solar power may not be there yet, but if you want a 100% eco-friendly car, just hook up your new solar panels (from Sam’s Club) to your new Tesla Roadster, and you’re all set.

2010 Buick LaCrosse - YAWN, Ahem, ‘Scuse Us - Sneak Peek

2010 Buick LaCrosse Sneak Peak

2010 Buick LaCrosse Sneak Peak

On Monday, GM released a sneak preview of the redesigned Buick LaCrosse. The photo, which is of a relatively unexciting grill, is apparently intended to generate enthusiasm for the 2010 Buck LaCrosse’s official unveiling at the LA Auto Show in November. Besides a “fresh” new grill, one of the 2010 LaCrosse’s most anticipated features, repeated by all the major auto authorities, is its future distinction as the first car to sit on GM’s FWD Epsilon II global platform. Oh, we can hardly contain ourselves.

Rumored to be drawing heavily from the Buick Invicta concept car that debuted earlier this year at the Beijing Auto Show, the 2010 LaCrosse is supposed to be the vehicle that catapults Buick into the 21st century. No word on pricing, but a hopeful GM is banking on selling about 65,000 to 75,000 units annually, most likely indicating an attainable mid-20k to 30k price range.

Exploratory Talks To Sell HUMMER To China Fall Through, GM Thoroughly Failing At “Courage Under Fire”

|

As the HUMMER division looks out upon a dismal landscape in the civilian market, parent company GM has been met with yet another roadblock as they desperately try to rid themselves of the powerful line of off-road vehicles. In today’s news, it was announced that Chinese SUV manufacturer Hunan Changfeng has ended discussions with GM about the purchase of the HUMMER line. One of the top 3 market leaders in the Chinese auto industry, Changfeng showed an active interest in taking over GM’s HUMMER division earlier this year but has recently withdrawn all tenative offers. Negative market analyst feedback and the ever-fluctuating price of oil apparently caused Changfeng to be a little trigger-shy.

All hope not lost, GM is continuing talks with India-based Tata Motor Corps - the same company that relieved Ford of its ailing Jaguar and Land Rover subsidiaries in June.

GM, which as been frantically trying to unload the HUMMER line as quickly and as quietly as possible since earlier this summer, had already bought out several private dealerships, leading some to speculate that the HUMMER line would be killed entirely. Exploratory talks with companies like Russia’s Oleg Deripaska and the aforementioned Tata Motors, however, offer a glimmer of hope on the HUMMER horizon.

We say: GM - Look at Chrysler LLC. Instead of sending Jeep to the proverbial glue factory, Chrysler is performing massive reconstructive surgery to keep the Jeep line current and “green.” They’re not throwing in the towel, they’re not buckling under the crippling pressure of the global warming myth. So why can’t you do the same? As the Marines whom your HUMMER line helps outfit are wont to say, “Adapt, Improvise, and Overcome.” Seriously GM, man up.

Firemen Busted Using Fire Engine To Pick Up Women; Innuendo-Laden Sub-Header Replaced By Graphic Below

|

An article in today’s edition of the UK Daily Mail reported that a crew of firefighters in Newcastle were busted by a cab driver Saturday night for using the fire company’s fire truck to pick up women. According to the disgruntled cabbie, he had observed the behavior on several previous occasions, but on this one particular evening he had apparently had it up “tah he-uh”. After snapping a picture with his camera phone of a young blonde woman exiting the fire truck in the town square [high five, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service], he anonymously reported the incident to the bureau fire chief. When questioned, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service area manager Kevin Hepple confirmed that truck in the picture was indeed one of their crew engines, but until a complete investigation into the matter is conducted, he is “unable to confirm what has occurred in this instance or to comment further on it.”

We say: Isn’t the chick factor the reason why a third of those guys take the job in the first place? As long as their joyride didn’t cause any neglected citizens to burn like marshmallows, then don’t be such player haters, England.

GM Boosts MPG Ratings For Chevy, GMC Trucks And SUVs

| пятница, 25 сентября 2009 г.

Chevy Tahoe XFE

A spin on Chrysler’s wave of 2-Mode Hybrid vehicles, GM has announced plans to expand its fuel efficient XFE line-up for 2009. Currently, the only XFE [Xtra Fuel Economy] vehicle available is the Chevy Cobalt XFE, a fuel efficient version of Chevy’s small car that was released last March. Using a combination of mass and drag-reducing enhancements, the Cobalt XFE saw a 9% jump in fuel economy [from 33 mpg hwy to 36 mpg hwy] while the Cobalt line saw an 8% jump in sales.

Recognizing the dramatic change in consumer interests as wrought by the fuel crisis, GM has decided to perform an XFE overhaul on its 2009 large vehicle line up. Among the vehicles scheduled for an XFE face lift: the Chevy Silverado pick-up truck, Chevy Tahoe SUV, GMC Sierra pick-up truck, and the GMC Yukon SUV.

The XFE package will be offered on 2WD vehicles with a 5.3-L V8 engine and 6-sp transmission, and will see a bump of about 1mpg in both city and highway fuel efficiency. Currently, all models marked for XFE conversion average about 14 mpg city/20 hwy. Although the increase probably won’t cause much of a stir in the hybrid/alternative fuel market, buyers already in the market for large, powerful vehicles will appreciate the slight break at the pump.

Historic Stock Car Racing believes cars matter

| пятница, 11 сентября 2009 г.

#43 was Richard Petty\’s number; but HSCRS wants you to remember the marque, too. (Photo by Terry Parkhurst)

Do you remember when the fleet of cars lapping Daytona or Talladega looked vaguely akin to the cars you’d see on the street? Well then, the Historic Stock Car Racing (HSCRS) series is for you. It was founded in 1994 and its purpose as an organization is the restoration, preservation and continued competition of former NASCAR stock cars.

You’re not going to find that rolling doorstop, the Car of Tomorrow here. Instead, you’re going to find a rainbow collection of multi-hued variants of the best the General, Ford and Chrysler had to offer before stock cars began to loose their soul. Think pre-millennium machines.

NASCAR these days are really more about the drivers, than the cars.

“We’re driver dependent,” admitted Steve Peterson, technical director for the NASCAR Nextel Cup series, a few years back to the New York Times. “They’re the heroes. We’re not talking about a Peugeot engine versus a Renault engine. In NASCAR, it’s about Jeff Gordon versus Tony Stewart.”

But in HSCRS, it’s all about the racecars themselves and the series’ members believed in the continuing competition of those racecars. These are owners and drivers who believe that historic thoroughbreds belong on a racetrack and not in a museum. Call it living history.

There are just two categories for all cars: Vintage for cars aged 1948 through 1980; Historic for cars aged 1981 through 1994. Cars are not accepted for competition without a documented racing history. One cannot make a “new old race car,” if you will, and expect to be a part of HSCRS.

The HSCRS is big on giving back to the community; as a result, it focuses on fundraising activities for children’s charities.

HSCRS brought what was literally a colorful selection of vintage NASCAR racecars to Pacific Raceways, just outside of Kent, Washington on the July fourth weekend, as part of the Northwest Historics. The Historics are a vintage automobile race, for all sorts of cars, staged to benefit Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. It generally features vintage sports cars, sports sedan, open wheel racecars (such as Formula Vee or Formula Ford) and even some vintage CanAm cars.

Nine cars came to Pacific Raceways: a 1968 Ford Torino (blue/gold) driven by Jimmy Castle; a 1980 Oldsmobile 442 silver/black) driven by John Davis; a 1987 Chevrolet driven by Gary Sousa; a 1991 Chevrolet Lumina (yellow) driven by Vic Edelbrock Jr.; a 1992 Ford Thunderbird (green/white) driven by John Scherer; a 1993 Chevrolet Lumina (rainbow) driven by Steve Schoellhorn; a 1993 Chevrolet (NACAR) driven by Dan Verstuyft; a 1994 Ford Thunderbird (blue) driven by Garland Self; and a 1995 Ford Thunderbird (blue) driven by George Fraser.

Ernie Irvan originally drove the 1991 Chevrolet Lumina, in NASCAR competition, driven by Vic Edelbrock Jr. this year.

Pacific Raceways is 2.25 miles long, with 9 turns and a straightaway that measures about a quarter mile. The straightaway dumps right into the first turn, which is a tight twist and turn-around into turn three and then down a hill at about a 35-degree angle and into two more turns. The result was the big NASCAR cars couldn’t ever achieve the speeds you’d see at Talladega or Daytona. It was reminiscent of the days when stock cars raced at the great, now defunct, track down in Riverside, California.

Steve Schoellhorn in his 1993 Chevrolet Lumina got around the course with a best time of 1:36.351 minutes, in a 7 lap race on Saturday, to take the checked flag for first. Dan Verstuyft did the best time around the track, with a lap time of 1:35.124 minutes and achieved the best overall speed with just 85.152 miles-per-hour. Of course, on the straightaway, the cars could hit 130 to 140 mph, before they’d have to get on the brakes, in a big way, to make it through the turns.

Sunday’s race started with a ground pounding, full throttle pounce by Garland Self in the 1994 Ford Thunderbird. His first lap around the track was done in a scant 1:34 minutes (timed by reporter’s watch). But by the second go-‘round, Steve Schoellhorn had taken the lead and John Davis’ 1980 Oldsmobile 442 had to coast into the pits, apparently with engine problems.

On the third lap Self passed Schellhorn going out onto the straightaway. By the fifth lap, going onto the straightaway, John Scherer had managed to position his 1992 Ford Thunderbird into the lead, with Schoellhorn hot on his tail, followed by Garland and then George Fraser in a 1995 Ford Thunderbird; and on the final lap, Garland Self was in the lead with his ’94 Thunderbird, followed closely by John Scherer in his ’92 Thunderbird.

The following weekend, HSCRS brought its show to the Portland Historics races. There are two more races, later this year, where they will appear: the SCCA Historic at Infineon Raceway on September 19-21, and the Thunderhill Shelby Club Event on October 18 and 19. Further information can be gleaned at the series website: www.hscrs.com - Terry Parkhurst

GM Dealership Goes Green, HUMMER Like, “Et Tu, Brute?”

| понедельник, 7 сентября 2009 г.

For a GM/Hummer break-up news update, GM just witnessed the launch of its first green dealership. Located in Highland, Michigan the LaFontaine Automotive Group celebrated the opening of their new, $15 million dollar, 64 thousand square-foot facility on Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

In addition to enormous skylights aimed at reducing electricity bills,  the building also features doors made of entirely of hard-packed, solid forms of corncob and wheat [insert your own waste-related joke here] . The building’s most innovative and most expensive feature, however, is the underground geothermal heating and cooling system which consists of 64 in-ground wells used for the capture and storage of natural energy.

Considered a ballsy move given GM’s current financial woes, owner Mike LaFontaine anticipates recovering the debt in as little as 5 years. According to LaFontaine, “There’s a tremendous number of consumers out there who want to purchase from a green dealer.” Although the decision to go green wasn’t suggested by GM, LaFontaine predicts that any new dealership built within the next ten years will be enviro-friendly. Undoubtedly a smart marketing maneuver, green dealerships will also help GM to compete with other notoriously green automobile manufactures like Toyota and Honda.

According to Susan Docherty, vice president at LaFontaine Buick-Pontiac-GMC, GM already produces vehicles that are more fuel efficient than those of their rivals, but consumers don’t typically associate GM with “green” products. With the construction of more dealerships like LaFontaine, Docherty hopes to change that misconception.
