The tanker truck that Donald Wood overlooked: the Crosley Gasporter

On the Crosley Gang mailing list, member Louis Hudgin recently shared some photos from the family business, Grand Canyon Airlines. Why with a bunch of Crosley guys? Because in each of the photos, we see at work a Gasporter, a unique little vehicle built by Engineering Research Associates in St. Paul, Minnesota, on a Crosley chassis. The Gasporter took the idea of the tanker truck that Donald Wood just explored in yesterday’s SIA Flashback to its extreme – all tank, no cab. Thanks for the pics, Louis!

Huntsville ATHS shows the trucks of cotton country

While searching for a few parts last week, I spoke to my friend Mike at Mike’s Auto Parts in Ridgeland, Mississippi, who filled me in on the ATHS national convention and meet in Huntsville, Alabama, on the last weekend in May. More than 500 trucks attended the show, slightly down from the 550 that attended last years event, but the caliber of restored pickups and big rigs more than made up for the fewer numbers. Mike tracked down not one but two 1959 Diamond T trucks with the Hall-Scott LP gas option that was offered from the dealer in that model year. Hall-Scott has had an interesting history in many different vehicles, including airplanes and boats. Ford depot hacks and Chevrolet Cameo pickups shared the same display field with Reos, Whites, Macks and Freightliners. Next year’s national convetion will be held in Pleasanton, California, on May 27th-29th at the Alameda County Fairgorunds.  Ed Lucast, the moderator of the ATHS website posted hundreds of pictures in their online discussion forum in the ”truck show photos” section.  Lots of really neat trucks pictured there.

Four-Links – Alice Ramsey road trip, Royal Enfield road trip, Bedrock Weekend, Bugatti collection

* Alice Huyler Ramsey, a 22-year-old housewife, was the first woman to drive across the United States from coast to coast in June 1909. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the trip, two groups of women are following Ramsey’s tire tracks with a cross-continental trip of their own in a 1909 Cadillac and a 1915 Model T. Follow along on their blog to catch their progress.

* Another road trip, this one across India and on the back of a Royal Enfield motorcycle. And because roadtripper Gary Richards works for Mack and Volvo, he took plenty of pics of the highly decorated trucks plying the narrow roads in India.

* No, of course I can’t read Danish, but the language of crazy hot rodder is universal, and the Danish hot rodders seem plenty willing to toss their rods around an old gravel pit and listen to some rockabilly, as evidenced by the photos from their recent Bedrock Weekend. (via)

* This is a world-traveling Four-Links. First America, then India, then Denmark, and now to France, where H.A.M.B.ster James D visited the Schlumpf Bugatti collection in Mülhouse. Of course, it’s not just Bugattis, but there’s certainly a lot of that deep blue around the place.

* Finally, Bumbeck over at Clunkbucket found a topic near and dear to our hearts: small cars on a stick. In this case, it’s a Renault Dauphine in Bowling Green, Kentucky, being held up by a cartoonized transmission worker.

Rambler Love: Hemmings is full of it

This past Sunday, the Wally Parks NHRA Museum at Pomona was host to the 3rd annual Socal AMC gathering, a show so big that we haven’t seen its like since there were still AMC dealerships (speak for yourself – DS). The bulk of the interest was around the AMX and Javelin models, but there were still Ramblers, Gremlins, a Concord, a Pacer, and the most gorgeous restored Hudson pickup we’ve ever seen. As a bonus, if you were part of the show and entered a car there, you got to go poke around the museum for free. Sweet!

As regular blog readers recall, after finding the AMX/3 pushmobile, Tom Delaney envisioned creating replicas, and here he displayed his efforts along that path: a fiberglass replica body and a chassis to go underneath the body.

Pass the pitcher

For crying out loud, don’t ask me how I missed this. I have family roots in Pennsylvania, went to school there, lived there and love the snacks it produces, most of all the baked variety. So imagine my shock to get a mailing from Robert Johnson of Ocala, Florida, telling me about a pretzel maker I’d never heard of. The horror!

Robert, like me, is into Pennsylvania pretzels and delivery trucks alike. The image comes form a box of Salty Stix produced by H.K. Anderson, which we learned has been baking quality pretzels in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, since back in 1888. The bakery’s now located on Old Philadelphia Pike, but previously was on Charlotte Street, which was where this photo of Anderson’s delivery fleet was snapped, presumably in the 1920s. Robert wants to know the make of these trucks (with Boyertown or Reading bodies, maybe?), and so do we. Click on the photo for a larger version, and if you can make an ID here, please do.
